SuperFeast is one of the largest medicinal mushroom brands in Australia and has been in the herbal tonic business for over a decade. As someone passionate about traditional medicine, I was keen to learn more about SuperFeast, try their products, chat with their founder Mason, and share my review.

A Look Into SuperFeast:

SuperFeast was founded and created by health advocate, Mason Taylor. Mason Taylor has conducted numerous interviews and podcasts. As you observe his passionate approach toward his company, a SuperFeast statement presents itself in multiple places: “We do not sell anything we would not give to our own family!”

Similar to my own health journey, throughout his life, Taylor had chronic physical and mental health issues (exhaustion and candida). Having been let down by modern medicine, he sought answers in the ancient world of herbal remedies, and to his surprise… he fell in love with it. This marked the beginning of the traditional tonic brand that we now know as SuperFeast. The company specialises in medical mushrooms as well as tonic herbs and minerals.

Founded in 2011, the family business initially operated in Australia before expanding to the United States. Using their 2 websites and social media channels, they appeal to a huge number of clients across the globe.

Quick summary

Pros – what we like

  • Great earthy taste in comparison to other brands
  • Their medicinal mushroom powders contain 100% mushroom fruiting bodies and does not contain any grain filler
  • The company has a strong belief on authentic Di Dao sourcing and Daoist philosophy
  • The products are hot water extracted and dual extracted for superior bioavailability
  • Independently tested for metals, pesticides, molds, and microbials at TGA accredited facilities.
  • SuperFeast has donated over $50,000 as of October 2021 and are working towards a goal of donating 2% of all revenue to land care and indigenous charities.

Cons – how they could improve

  • Beta-glucan amount is currently not specified on the label. It would be awesome to see this in the future
  • Their medicinal mushroom products are not organic. It would be great to see SuperFeast’s products as Certified Organic. Don’t forget however that they do strict testing at TGA accredited facilities and their products are non GMO.

Di Dao: The Key To SuperFeast

The word Di Dao (or Di Tao) loosely translates to “Earth Tao” or, in other words, “the true authentic source.” Daoist herbalism illuminates traditional Chinese medicine practitioners about the benefits of herbs and tonics while emphasising the importance of the factors that contribute to plants’ growth.

The more authentic the source of a herb is, the more beneficial it is is one of the Leading Doctrines of the Daoist traditions.

As Mason Taylor delved deeper into the Di Dao, he devoted himself to learning as much as possible. He discovered that the plants associated with the philosophy have the greatest medicinal value.

Thus, the company’s priority is to source raw materials from the wildest parts of nature. This respects both the authenticity and conventional principles of Di Dao herbal medicine.

The primary sources for the natural ingredients are extracted from the rugged mountain ranges of the historically rich nation: China. SuperFeast also practices Ayurvedic medicine (Ayurveda) secondarily for some of its products.

The herbs for this historically renowned healing system are extracted from the depths of India. These are meticulously harvested by trained experts. They are educated to be well-versed in each herb to ensure their essence is captured and preserved till production dates.

MSM is an exception

While almost all ingredients originate from natural sources, SuperFeast relies on outsourced production for their mineral, MSM. Their primary supplier is OptiMSM, a USA-based enterprise.  Numerous companies rely on OptiMSM for their products and services because it is considered the best available source for the mineral.

What do we like about SuperFeast?

SuperFeast is one of Australia’s most trusted herbal tonic suppliers, and its online platform offers more than just consumer products; they engage in activities to foster awareness of traditional Chinese medicine beliefs.

Despite its enormous growth, SuperFeast still humbly serves its customers with commitment to respect of the mushrooms’s origin, while serving modern needs. This is a great way to stay loyal to its consumers in the healthcare industry.

1. Independently tested at TGA-accredited facilities

SuperFeast prides itself on its rigorous testing for heavy metals, pesticides and fungicides. As part of the company’s commitment to high-quality products, they undergo various tests during each phase of production. TGA, which stands for Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration, tests the purity and efficacy of products. SuperFeast medicinal mushroom products are independently tested for metals, pesticides, molds, and microbials at TGA accredited facilities. Furthermore, the products are inspected in China before being distributed worldwide, ensuring consumer safety.

2. Commitment to education and advocacy

What impresses me about SuperFeast is their ongoing commitment to traditional medicine education across various platforms. With over 150 well-conducted podcasts and more than forty niche-related articles posted, the management wants to promote the consumption of herbal medications among its audience.  There are public transcriptions of the podcasts on the company’s website and its YouTube channel. In addition, the detailed articles are easily accessible for free through the same platform.

SuperFeast has published a small collection of E-books that address different aspects of physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. These books emphasise personal care in one way or another, each covering a topic that is entirely independent of the previous one. They currently offer two free courses called “Embodied Health” by Mason Taylor and “Tonic Herbalism.”

3. Giving back to the community

As an Australian organisation, SuperFeasts takes its responsibilities very seriously toward its country and its people. Accordingly, the company is actively involved in efforts to contribute 2% of its revenues to land preservation and indigenous causes.

The company has also spent over $50,000 on charitable efforts to provide aid to deserving communities as well as the environment.

How could SuperFeast improve?

1. Non-organic products

A true organic product is grown without the use of synthetic chemicals (pesticides, fertilizers, etc.). While SuperFeast’s ingredients are botanically sourced, their products or materials are not certified organic.  While this may sound alarming, do not forget that all their products are independently tested for metals, pesticides, molds, and microbials at TGA accredited facilities (as stated above). It would be great to see their products as certified organic in the future.

2. Beta-glucan amounts are not specified

Among medicinal mushrooms, beta-glucans are the potent bioactive polysaccharide that make medicinal mushrooms beneficial for health. Some of the benefits include reduced stress, a stable blood sugar level, and a strengthened immune system

According to Skye Chilton, the founder of RealMushrooms.com, beta-glucan amounts must be third party lab tested and specified on the label of medicinal mushroom products. Skye is also the son of Jeff Chilton, the founder of Nammex – the first medicinal mushroom extract company in the United States with over 40 years of experience.

Given the importance of these beta-glucans, this may be a deciding factor people who would want to know the exact beta-glucan content in their products. SuperFeast are respectfully transparent with this on their website stating “We do not standardise our products, nor do we focus on isolated compounds. We believe in the medicinal value of the whole herb.”

The Final Verdict

I hope this review of SuperFeast was educational and transparent! SuperFeast has just turned 11 years old and is one of the oldest medicinal mushroom companies in Australia, providing high quality powdered medicinal mushroom extracts.
Mason and his company continue to grow the SuperFeast brand online and now on shelves in health stores. Their medicinal mushroom powders are the best tasting out of all the brands I have tried in Australia, which is an extra bonus when combining it with soups or hot chocolates. The business’ success can be attributed to its dedication to providing authentic and pure Di Tao herbs and tonics. Although they do not standardise their medicinal mushrooms to beta-glucan levels, every service and product reflects the staff’s processes and efforts towards the Di Dao philosophy of traditional medicine.
